House breaking and robberies on the rise in Zululand

Take extra caution to prevent robbery and house breaking this festive season.

HOUSE breaking and robberies are a serious concern in Zululand.

With the festive season approaching, major police stations are flooded with theft, shoplifting and house breaking cases.

According to the police, criminals target home appliances such as television sets, computers, microwaves and cell phones.

Mtunzini SAPS spokesperson, Lt Sibusiso Guma said these acts also contribute to the rise of people arrested for being in possession of stolen goods.

‘Communities should start Neighbourhood Watch and Community Policing Forums (CPF). Police cannot fight this crime wave alone, but when we work together we can prosper,’ he said.

According to Guma, unemployment and retrenchments in various companies are a major contributor to the increase of crime in the area.

Police also cautioned the public about leaving houses unattended during the holidays.

They appealed to residents to be more aware of crime prevention measures at all times during the day and night.

‘If home owners are going away, they must ensure they get someone to look after their property. When the house in left unattended it provides criminals with the opportunity to break into houses and get away with belongings uninterrupted,’ Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson, Capt Debbie Ferreira.

‘During this time when everyone is relaxed, extra caution needs to be taken. Residents must make sure that they ask a friend or neighbour to look after their homes,’ she said.
