Howick ‘kidnapping’ drama ends in Empangeni

People responded to calls on social media to be on the look-out for a father and his son.

EMPANGENI police together with security companies and concerned citizens have arrested a man who allegedly kidnapped his six-year-old son in Howick this morning.

Social media was flooded with reports of the alleged kidnapping. People were urged to be on the look-out for the man’s car which was believed to be in the Zululand area.

Officials netted the man at the Five Ways Mall intersection in Empangeni just after noon today, and the young boy is now safely in police custody.

He has been described as being ‘shaken up, but okay’.

Details surrounding the incident are sketchy, however it is believed there is a court interdict against the man, prohibiting him from having any contact with the child.

The man was at Empangeni Child Welfare earlier today, but left before the police arrived.

An official from Child Welfare declined to comment on the incident.

Update to follow as the story develops.
