Fisherman rescues baby monkey

A 10-day-old monkey, suspected to be a twin was abandoned near Cape Vidal.

A 10-day-old monkey is well on the road to recovery after being rescued in Cape Vidal yesterday.

Now known as ‘Kewpie’, the baby samango monkey was found lying in the road by Mikhael Ebelthite, a holidaying fisherman.

The furry creature was taken to Mtubatuba Vets where she was looked after until CROW (Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife) came to collect her.

Judging by her minute size, it is suspected that Kewpie is a twin which is why she was abandoned.

‘When mothers of twins can’t cope in the wild, they often are forced to choose to care for just one rather than risk losing both of them,’ said Paul Hoyte from CROW.

Kewpie is at CROW where she will be cared for until she is ready to be released into the wild.
