Wage increase for domestic workers

Domestic workers' pay rises from about R2,065 a month to over R2,230 as of 1 December.

DOMESTIC workers are breathing a sigh of relief after the department of labour announced a minimum wage increase.

The 8% to 10% increase will be dependent on the hours and areas in which they work.

Domestic workers in larger area who work more than 27 hours per week should earn is 11.44 per hour – up from 10.59  – or a weekly rate of R 514.82. The monthly wage minimum in R2230.70.

The hourly rate for those working 27 hours or less is R13.39.

Employees who work more than 27 hours in smaller metropolitan areas should be paid not less than R10.23 per hour and those who work 27 hours or less should be paid a minimum of R12.07 per hour.

From 1 December, the new rate will be effective until the end of November next year.

Employers who fail to comply with the new labour rates will be taken to the labour court.
