UPDATE: KwaMsane protesters burn tyres on N2

The possibility of a march from KwaMsane to Mtubatuba Municipality later this morning has not yet been confirmed.

ELEVEN people have been arrested after last nights protests on the N2 near KwaMsane.

While the reason for the protest is one of service delivery, community leaders are also challenging Mtubatuba Municipality to step up and follow through on promises made when the new council was formed in May.

‘When Mtubatuba Municipality was disbanded earlier this year, many promises were made by COGTA that they would address the communities’ lack of water and electricity,’ said a community member who asked to remain anonymous.

‘Mtubatuba leadership must address the KwaMsane communities but they are nowhere to be found’.

A former municipal councillor, the community member said KwaMsane communities are concerned the municipality was disbanded by the ANC through COGTA, alleging COGTA MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube did so to conceal untoward tender-related activity.

The KwaMsane protests are a separate matter from last week’s Nkodibe community’s land dispute in which affected community members feared the demolition of their homes by the landowner.

The possibility of a march from KwaMsane to Mtubatuba Municipality later this morning has not yet been confirmed. As the situation on the N2 between KwaMsane and the R618 (St Lucia/Nongoma off ramp) remains volatile, motorists are urged to be vigilant and only use the route if absolutely necessary.

Current reports are that the alternate route via the sugar mill is open.

* Motorists can turnoff at the Umfolozi village turnoff and drive over the low level bridge on the dirt road leading to the sugar mill into Mtuba.
