Baby dumped in shopping centre restroom

Another baby has been abandoned at Sanlam Centre in Empangeni.

AN abandoned newborn baby girl was found in the restrooms of Sanlam Centre on Thursday afternoon by a cleaner.

Empangeni police were called to scene and the child was taken to the Lower Umfolozi War Memorial Regional Hospital.

According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, the baby was in a stable condition.

A case of child abandonment has been opened.

A hospital source said the mother of the child was a University of Zululand student who had given birth on Wednesday and was discharged on Thursday.

‘I immediately remembered the baby girl when police brought her in because she was wearing the same clothes the hospital staff had given her, as she had nothing to wear,’ said the source.

This is the second infant dumped at the Empangeni mall this year.

In September a baby boy was left at the centre’s underground parking lot and found in the early hours of the morning by an on duty security guard.

The child was also taken to LUWMRH.

Since the incident, the baby has been placed with a foster parent and a social worker appointed to the case is in search of a home for the baby.
