Unizulu staff member receives a prosthetic arm

Her arm amputated after contracting gangrene after an injury.

UNAWARE of her diabetic condition, University of Zululand (Unizulu) staff member, Phindile Mthiyane (43) had no choice but to have her arm amputated after contracting gangrene after an injury.

Six years later, Unizulu’s Human Resources Department, with the help of Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Department of Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics created the perfect prosthetic arm for her.

The mother of three and farm assistant at the institution’s Department of Agriculture said when she was approached by Unizulu HR Business Partner Suzette Nortje on the possibility of receiving a prosthetic arm, she experienced mixed emotions.

‘After losing my arm, there were several adjustments to my life in all spheres and at the point when I had just got a grip on my circumstance and knew how to handle everything, the possibility of change came along.

‘I was happy and fearful all at the same time. I was not sure if I needed it and what it would be like.

‘There are once again many adjustments to go through with my new arm and there are elements that require a lot of practice, but it has been an exciting and new journey for me, for which I am grateful.’ Phindile said.
