Aquadene mom burnt by firework

A woman walking in Aquadene with her child and puppy was injured by a firework last night.

AN Aquadene woman was badly burnt when a firework exploded on the pavement where she was walking last night.

‘I did not see the cracker as I walked, carrying my child,’ she said.
‘It exploded just above my knees and my dress actually caught alight.
‘It was extremely painful as the blast cut deep into my skin on both legs.’

The woman did not see who lit the firework.

Empangeni SPCA reported a quiet Diwali night as inspectors were not called out to pick up any animals.

‘It was nothing like previous years, we were really fortunate,’ said Cheryl Whittaker.

She added, ‘there were quite a few reports of crackers being set off and upon investigation we discovered that it was not even people celebrating Diwali.’

However, Wynand Strauss a trainee inspector with Richards Bay SPCA said ‘all suburbs in Richards Bay were affected by loud bangs last night’.

He responded to five calls from pet owners whose dogs had broken out of their properties and gone missing.

‘None of the missing dogs have been found and we are currently working with the owners to bring them home safely,’ said Strauss.
