Newborn kidnapped from Empangeni hospital

Fuyeni woman arrested for allegedly kidnapping a baby from an Empangeni hospital.

TWO days after snatching a newborn baby from her teenage mother, a Fuyeni woman was arrested by Empangeni detectives.

The drama unfolded on Tuesday this week, when the suspected kidnapper befriended a 17 year-old new mother and accompanied her to a hospital in Empangeni for her medical checks.

Police say that once there, the woman allegedly waited until the mother was hungry, offered to take care of the baby while she went to buy food, and then disappeared from the hospital premises.

A case of kidnapping was opened at Empangeni police station for further investigation.

Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences started to trace the baby and the suspect, and yesterday she was arrested . The infant was immediately hospitalised for a full examination.

The suspect will appear in the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court facing charges of kidnapping.

KZN Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Mamonnye Ngobeni commended the speedy arrest.

“We appeal to parents to take extra precautions if they meet strange people who want to help them with their children.’
