Foreign national killed in Empangeni hijacking

A Zimbabwean man died after being shot in the head during a hijacking.

A ZIMBABWEAN man was shot and killed during a hijacking in Empangeni last night.

Charles Mapsumo was with his 24-year-old girlfriend parked on the side of the road in Dumisani Makhaye Village at around 9pm when four armed men approached his Toyota Hilux.

‘According to the girlfriend, Mapsumo stepped willingly out of the vehicle, giving in to the hijackers’ demands,’ said Empangeni police spokesman, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose.

‘They shot him once in the head, before taking the bakkie with her still inside.’

Capt Mdlalose said Mapsumo died later at Ngwelezana Hospital.

Night of terror

The suspects fled the scene towards Empangeni Milling, where they raped the young woman.

They then drove to eNseleni, dumped her on the side of the road and sped off.

The Hilux was recovered this morning parked inside the garage of an abandoned home in the Ntambanana area, the front seat still covered in blood.

‘A case of murder, kidnapping and rape has been opened,’ said Capt Mdlalose.

The only description the victim was able to give the police is that of the suspects’ vehicle, a silver/grey VW Golf.
