SHOPPERS were held at gunpoint by a gang robbers when they stormed a shopping centre in Gingindlovu on Sunday at about 10am.
Several men, armed with AK47 rifles, entered the supermarket and while some guarded the shoppers in and outside the shop, others broke open the cash office door with a pick.
A security company had delivered cash to the supermarket 20 minutes earlier.
Several shots were fired outside the shop, before the men fled in a silver Opel Corsa bakkie, a red Opel sedan and a silver Hyundai Alantra.
Although shoppers and staff were shaken by the experience, no one was injured.
It is believed that several thousand rand was stolen from the store.
A firearm and cell phone were also stolen from a person in the car park as the robbers ran to their vehicles.
An eye witness said, ‘It seemed as though there were at least 10 men involved in the robbery.’
The case has been handed over to the Hawks for investigation.
