Service delivery protest in Jozini

Protesting residents claim they were promised water and houses from Mayor Jeff Vilane.

RESIDENTS of Machibini area near Jozini on Friday took to the streets and blockaded a provincial road in protest against poor service delivery.

Ward 7 residents are reportedy fed up with a lack of water and housing.

According to the protesters, uMkhanyakude District Mayor Jeff Vilane promised to build them RDP houses but nothing has materialised.

‘He made empty promises when he said we would get RDP houses and, since he made those promises, we have not seen or heard from him,’ said one of the protesters.

The group, which included school children, blocked the P522 with rocks, not allowing vehicles through.

uMhanyakude has acknowledged the dire state of water delivery in the district and has been given 14 tankers from the Department of Water and Sanitation. ‘Mayor Vilane met with Machibini residents last week and promised them JoJo tanks,’ said uMkhanyakude Spokesperson Mdu Dlamini.

‘Mr Ngcobo, Head of Technical Services delivered three tanks earlier this week but there are delays in delivering water because we are still putting together a delivery schedule which will take the entire district into account,’ said Dlamini.

Regarding housing, Dlamini said Vilane would not have promised residents RDP houses as uMkhanyakude is not mandated to cover housing.

‘Anything to do with housing must be dealt with by Jozini Local Municipality,’ said Dlamini.
