Two poachers, three rhino down

Two rhino horns as well as poaching equipment and clothing were reportedly recovered at the scene.

HOURS after a poacher was shot dead in a gun battle with conservation officers, the body of a second poacher has been recovered in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Park.

Unconfirmed reports said rangers who heard a gunshot yesterday morning came across a rhino that had been killed near the Hlabisa exit on the corridor road.

A skirmish occurred as they pursued the perpetrators and a poacher was killed in the gun fight.

Two rhino horns as well as poaching equipment and clothing were reportedly recovered at the scene.

Another two rhinos, both shot dead but with horns intact, were discovered a distance from of the first incident.

At mid-afternoon the second alleged poacher’s body was found, closer to the built-up residential section approaching Hlabisa.

While Ezemvelo’s recent annual reported claimed rhino poaching stats had declined, it is now believed about 100 rhino have been slaughtered in KZN this year alone.
