Veldenvlei residents shocked in the shower

Electricians conducted a thorough check of every mini substation cubicle in the Richards Bay neighbourhood.

TAKING a shower usually recharges one’s energy levels, but for a number of Veldenvlei residents this has done much more – it has literally become an electrifying experience.

‘At first I couldn’t work out what was happening, or whether it was my imagination,’ said Rob Sedice of Cantua street, who started receiving painful jolts of juice every time he adjusted the taps while showering.

This was a ‘soapie’ of a different kind, and from singing in the shower he had ended up being a conductor.

‘My initial reaction was that there was something wrong with the earth leakage on the geyser, but when I called in an electrician he said this was not the case.’

Rob mentioned the incident to a neighbour friend and learned he too had had the same experience – and so had various other people in the suburb.

‘We wondered if it might be linked to ongoing water overflow problems our area has experienced, as we had even on occasion seen smoke coming out the ground – perhaps an electricity cable had come into contact with the water.’

However, municipal electricians started a thorough check of every mini substation cubicle in the neighbourhood and excluded that possibility.

The cause was eventually traced to a house in Weigelia street with inadequate earthing feeding back into the system from the geyser.

The owner has been given a deadline to ensure the fault is repaired.

Assurance was given that the electrical fault was not life threatening, as it is of a relatively low voltage.
