Police hunt for dangerous escapee

Sthembiso Bongani Mthetwa managed to escape from Sundumbili police station cells.

CRACK investigative police unit, the Hawks, have issued an urgent appeal to the community to help them search for a man who escaped from police custody last month.

Sthembiso Bongani Mthetwa (27) was arrested on 3 September and detained at the Sundumbili police station.

He was expected to appear in the eShowe Magistrate’s Court on charges of attempted murder and possession of illegal firearms which included an R5 rifle, and AK47 and 9mm pistol, but managed to escape from the police cells and has evaded capture since.

According to a statement by KZN police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane, Mthetwa is allegedly linked to a number of serious crimes such as murders and armed robberies.

‘He is said to be frequently seen at KwaMashu and Umlazi hostels, Mandeni and Sundumbili informal settlements as well as in and around the Inanda area, Chatsworth and the Jacobs hostel.

‘A warrant has been issued for his arrest.’

Police have also warned members of the public not to approach or try to apprehend the suspect as he is considered to be extremely dangerous.
