The blaze is reportedly not related to the nationwide student protests.

POLICE have closed the gates at the University of Zululand after a fire gutted the dining hall and the recreation centre on the KwaDlangezwa campus this morning.

According to Lt Sbusiso Guma from Mtunzini SAPS, the blaze was started at 4am and the fire department was called to the scene.

It is believed it was started as students are unhappy with the new SRC committee who were elected earlier this month. Initial reports suggested it was related to the national students protests.

‘This morning one of the security guards noticed one of the buildings on fire, he did not see anyone in the vicinity.

A case of arson has been opened but we can not confirm a motive at this time,’ Major Thulani Zwane, KZN Police spokesman.

A Unizulu student reported that it was ‘calm on campus’ and lectures were continuing as normal.

Police have been deployed to the university to monitor the situation.
