Hospital faced with high failed abortion cases

Various complications arise from backstreet abortions which contribute to the maternal death rate.

THE Lower Umfolozi War Memorial Regional Hospital (LUWMRH) is still being inundated with septic and incomplete teenage abortions cases.

This according to LUWMRH CEO Nqobile Mkhwanazi, who said that various complications arise from backstreet abortions which contribute to the maternal death rate.

Serving 18 district hospitals and 23 clinics with about 10 000 baby deliveries per year, LUWMRH faces a high rate of teen pregnancies and abortions, which is a major concern for the hospital’s management.

‘The hospital has an excellent, fully equipped and free family planning and CTP (choice of termination of pregnancy) clinic offering holistic care and counselling.’ said Mkhawanazi.

‘We have High Transmission Sites situated at both Umfolozi College and the University of Zululand, which is run by the district Department of Health in which LUWMRH offers services relating to counselling, testing and contraception.’

‘In addition there are midwives throughout the region and entities conducting awareness campaigns and outreach projects to educate young women,’ Mkhwanzai said.
