Major upgrade for eSikhaleni

The intersection at the main entrance to eSikhaleni will undergo an upgrade early next year.

A NUMBER of houses could be demolished next year to make way for an upgrade of the intersection at the main entrance to eSikhaleni.

The information was revealed during the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) public mass meeting held in eSikhaleni.

City Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo, urged maximum cooperation from the public, especially from homeowners with houses built in servitudes.

‘We motivate owners to volunteer to vacate the area, especially those with houses situated on land zoned non-residential,’ said Mhlongo.

‘This is very dangerous because water pipes, for example, have a limited life span and will have to be replaced at some point.

‘And when they burst, they can put people’s lives in danger.’

Mhlongo said even when owners secured land through traditional leadership, they must visit the municipality to get assurance whether the area is on a servitude or a wetland.

The R54.7-million construction will begin from the mall crossroad to the Bhambatha Hostel T-junction early next year.

R18-million will be injected this year, an additional R18.7-million in the next financial year and another R18-million in 2017.

The J1 and Maholoholo road side will also be upgraded.

This project will be spearheaded by the City of uMhlathuze in a joint venture with the Department of Transport and Richards Bay Minerals.

‘During the State of the City Address, we promised to expand the intersection and beautify the township’s entrance.

‘We are now reporting that we will execute what we promised. We will work with other stakeholders in this project as well as the community,’ said Mhlongo.
