Mission to instil national pride in school children

ESIKHALENI and Port Durnford businessman BT Gumede is on a mission to teach local school children to love their country.

He came up with the idea of placing a plaque containing the national anthem lyrics and the national flag at the school.

‘Many people can’t sing the national anthem properly, especially when they have to sing it through other languages which are not their mother tongue.

‘We should put up a similar plaque at every school in the uThungulu District.

‘Through this I hope we can teach our children the importance of the national flag and for them to be able to sing the national anthem without mincing some of the words.

‘I also hope this will inculcate national pride among our youth,’ Gumede ended.

School Governing Body member CN Mpanza applauded Gumede’s idea.

School Principal JS Xulu thanked Gumede for his gesture, saying he is proud his school was the first to receive the gift and expressed the hope his pupils would now sing the national anthem with pride.
