UPDATE: Geobag boost for Alkantstrand

More good news for battered Alkantstrand beach.

HOT on the heels of good news that dredge sand is again being pumped onto the beach at Alkantstrand, comes the welcome report that further fortification of the receding coastline will begin next week.

Preparation for the laying of a 300-metre line of geobags – large sand bags that will create an artificial slope – will start on Monday, according to the City Engineering Department.

As far back as 2013, this ‘soft engineering’ option was mooted by the then Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs (DAEA) in its published Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) fact sheet.

DAEA said urgent attention would have to be given to the receding coastline north of the Port of Richards Bay.

Since then, attempts to protect the beach have been negligible, and huge tidal surges during storms over the past years have seen mass disintegration and narrowing of the dune defence that protects the coastline.

Hopefully, the combination of the large sandbags and pumped dredge soil will see the beach back to its Blue Flag status by the December holidays.
