Cleaning up Empangeni

To promote local tourism, volunteers embarked on City clean-up campaign.

VOLUNTEERS embarked on a clean-up campaign in Empangeni on Saturday morning.

Tourism officials and public figures joined forces to pick up litter and empty refuse skips at the taxi A-rank and surrounding areas.

The initiative is aimed at promoting a healthy environment and creating a tourism friendly location.

‘We cannot encourage tourists to visit our area if it is in a dirty state. For people to come to our region they need to know we care for our environment. This will promote tourism and ensure economic development,’ said organiser Lindani Mthembu.

The project was also supported by the City Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo.

‘It is fascinating to see young people doing something for the environment. As the municipality we support such programmes. It is time that we all adopt these initiatives and practice them in our own areas,’ said Mhlongo.

The group also visited tourism destinations around the area, including the King Cethswayo monument in eSikhaleni SeNkosi.
