Spider fanatics get together

Spiders get a bad rap for Halloween, but there are plenty of people who love them.

SPIDER enthusiasts got together on Saturday at the Zululand Kayak Club for the ‘T-Fanatics Taruntula’ braai.

They showed off their prized eight-legged pets, had a tarantula quiz and even handled some of the giant spiders.

The quiz was a highly contested affair in which spider men and women had to prove who knows the most about tarantulas.

The first prize was a female Orange Banded Bird Eater tarantula, second prize a Blue Baboon tarantula and the third prize winner received a Trinidad Chevron tarantula.

Local tarantula keeper and organiser of the get-together, Adèle Ras, says that tarantulas are gentle giants, which are extremely fascinating.

‘Very few spiders are dangerous, and through our passion for these beautiful creatures, we educate people.

‘Once bitten by this interesting hobby you learn to respect all God’s creatures,’ said Adèle.
