Esikhawini police shut down shebeens operating without liquor licenses.

HUNDREDS of full alcohol bottles were destroyed by police in eSikhaleni on Tuesday morning.

In a mission to clean up the township, the beverages into the police station’s drain system.

They had beeen confiscated in September from several shebeens trading without licenses in the area

‘People need to apply for permits and liquor licenses before they decide to open up bottle stores and shebeens,’ said Capt Nokuthla Dube.

She pleaded with communities not to purchase alcohol from illegal outlets.

‘These places that trade without permission normally sell alcohol to young children. As the police, we are determined to end this crime wave in the area,’ she said.

Dube also said the illegal traders also paid heavy fines.

‘We will continue with police raids and make sure we prevent any criminal activities and arrest offenders,’ she said.

Esikhaleni police spokesperson Lt Thembinkosi Mkhumane said community members must always report illegal traders.

‘The community needs to work together with the police. Any criminal activities must always be reported in order to ensure a healthy and crime free environment.’
