UPDATE: Defrauded Mtuba widow reimbursed

Miriam Janse van Vuuren's perseverance in finding justice eventually paid off.

THE Mtubatuba widow who lost more than R20 000 in a SIM swap scam earlier this year, is celebrating after learning she will be reimbursed in full.

‘An amount of R15 889 was paid back to me by First National Bank and I signed a release form for the difference to make up the full amount withdrawn from my account,’ said a relieved Miriam Janse Van Vuuren.

This after months of telephone calls and e-mails to both FNB and Vodacom, and relentless follow-ups to investigations which, at one point, appeared to be waning.

Although Vodacom’s investigations revealed a corrupt employee, who was subsequently charged at the Wynburg Magistrate’s Court, the mobile service provider refused to take responsibility for its part in the scam.
