A LARGE group of protesters are rampaging through Melmoth, burning tyres and looting shops.
Witnesses are describing the mob as 200 strong and ‘totally out of control’.
‘They cleaned out the KFC on Main Road and are now looting foreign owned shops,’ said the witness, who did not wish to be named.
The protests started early this morning, and police sources have revealed that members of the mob have approached the police station, demanding that suspects who were arrested be released.
The protesters are marching against unemployment, the water crisis in the uThungulu District and crime in Melmoth among other things.
A police source told the Zululand Observer that they are struggling to control the protest, and have called for back-up.
Many roads leading into and out of Melmoth have been closed, and motorists are being urged to seek alternative routes.
This is a developing story. We will keep you updated as it unfolds.
