A MAN walked into the Zululand Observer Empangeni office reception area just after 11am on Monday morning, and attempted to steal a cellphone.
He told employees he was selling gold, which turned out to be bird seed.
Receptionist Freda Geldenhuys was speaking to the man when he nonchalantly picked up her cellphone and turned to walk towards the door.
Geldenhuys then shouted for help.
‘I heard Freda calling my name,’ said Sub-Editor Carl de Villiers.
‘The second time she called out frantically, I knew there was trouble.’
De Villiers raced to her aid and was perplexed when the man promptly turned around and returned the phone to Geldenhuys when confronted.
‘I am not quite sure why he didn’t run,’ he said.
The police were summoned and searched the man, finding credit cards and a Volkswagen car key.
Police urge all residents to ensure their doors or security gates are always locked, and to be vigilant when dealing with people, even in places of work.
