Gang arrested with explosives and raw gold

14 people suspected to be involved in illegal gold mining operations in Pongola will appear in court today.

AN intelligence-driven police operation in Pongola yesterday led to the arrest of 14 people, suspected to have been involved in illegal gold mining operations.

Their Klipwal house was stormed and their loot confiscated.

Two unlicensed pistols, explosives, dagga, mine torches, cellphones suspected to be stolen, bullet proof vests and raw unprocessed gold rocks were seized from the suspects’ house near the old Klipwal mine in the raid.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 32, were arrested and charged with being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of explosives, raw unprocessed gold rocks and dagga.

They are expected to appear at Pongola Magistrate’s Court today (Wednesday).
