‘Hole’ lot of complaining from residents

Potholes on the roads around town are becoming more than just a nuisance

RESIDENTS of Empangeni’s Durnford Road have expressed dismay at the rapid degradation of the road surface – with recent rains exposing shoddy workmanship on one of the town’s major thoroughfares.

‘The rains over the past two weeks have stripped away the plugs and patches on the road, exposing no less than 54 potholes on the road, which stretches just 1.3km,’ said one resident, who asked not to be named.

A quick survey of the dual-lane roadway which is the main link between Empangeni’s Kuleka industrial area and the town, confirmed the number of potholes and hotspots.

This is also a major thoroughfare for ambulances, traffic officials and industrial vehicles.

‘Unfortunately this is a clear case of the City officials being ‘penny wise and pound foolish’ as the repairs to this road have been inferior.

‘To repair the damage properly will be a costly exercise, but it needs to be done sooner rather than later.’

Another motorist complained about the state of Main Road, where potholes and rutting have also formed.

‘I have to take my 4×4 to work now, and leave my sedan at home. The potholes on the Main Road are ruining my vehicle. Something needs to be done.’
