UPDATE: Search on for abandoned baby’s family

The baby found in a plastic bag near Sanlam Centre is thriving.

THE newborn baby found abandoned in a plastic bag at the Sanlam Centre in Empangeni last week, is now smiling happily from his snug crib at the Lower Umfolozi War Memorial Hospital.

Now weighing in at 2.6kg thanks to the motherly support of the nursing staff, the little boy is visibly in a state of contentment.

The infant was rescued by on-duty security guard Phumzeni Dlamini and rushed to the hospital last Tuesday, where the baby will remain for the time being.

A case of child abandonment was opened by the Empangeni SAPS and is currently under investigation. Hospital social workers have been appointed to locate the family.

‘Social workers will liaise with relevant stakeholders in terms of the child’s welfare and the outcome will thus be determined by the findings of the investigation,’ said hospital Public Relations Officer, Khethiwe Dlamini.
