Robber steals cellphones from sports club change room

The SAPS cricket team were in town for a friendly game against local players.

A BRAZEN thief strolled through a group of policemen into the change rooms at Addison Park cricket field in Empangeni on Wednesday, helping himself to a number of cell phones.

The SAPS members representing the KZN police team that will be playing in the national police tournament, were up against a team of local players as a friendly warm-up.

The crook ducked into the bushes behind the field after jumping the fence, managing to escape despite players giving chase.

Unbeknown to the thief, nine police officers were seated on the pavillion while the local team was fielding.

Three high-end cellphones were taken, while wallets and cash was left behind.

A case of theft has been opened at the Empangeni police station.

• To make matters worse for the police, their team lost the match. The cops put up a score of 86 runs all out, which the local XI managed to reach with a comfortable five wickets in hand.
