VIDEO: Coastal Cleanup bags a bunch

Brave nature lovers clean up the coast.

DESPITE the appalling weather conditions, 1 014 volunteers braved the pouring rain to assist in the annual International Coastal Cleanup at Richards Bay on Saturday.

And assist they did, with 286 data recorders listing 3 897 bags of litter collected over a total distance of 89kms.

Working under the direction of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife District Conservation Managers Kevin Green and Frans Mthembu, and supported by the uMhlathuze Honorary Officers, each item gathered was classified to aid further research into marine pollution.

There were 23 273 ‘most likely to find’ objects including cigarette butts, plastic bags and glass, while packaging material (2 979), fishing gear (1 598) and personal hygiene items (1 254) showed the manner in which the ocean is used as a dumping ground.

Of concern was the number of medical articles recovered, including 88 syringes/needles and four saline drips, as well as 17 knives.

Unusual items included a blow-up doll, a TV remote, three dead snakes and three dead chickens.

‘We really appreciate the efforts of all concerned,’ said Green, ‘not only those who were prepared to get cold and wet, but also those who supported through donations and sponsorship.’

The message was reiterated by City of uMhlathuze Depauty Mayor, Cllr Vera Gumbi, who praised the co-operation between government at all tiers, business, schools and other participants.
