Security guard rescues abandoned baby

Night shift security guard finds a new born baby abandoned in a plastic packet at Empangeni shopping centre.

PACING to the sound of the howling wind through a dark and vacant Empangeni parking lot during the early hours of Tuesday morning, security guard Phumzeni Dlamini made a disconcerting discovery.

In a flower bed filled with rubbish from the day’s business lay a plastic bag from which escaped almost inaudible cries and strange movement.

Upon closer inspection, Dlamini found, wrapped in a blanket and shoved into the plastic bag, the most beautiful baby boy he had ever laid his eyes on.

‘He was tiny, but so handsome. He did not even cry much, just a few whimpers.’ Phumzeni said.

‘I was in absolute disbelief. I radioed my supervisor who called the ambulance and police.

‘Paramedics said he looked to be about two to three days old.’

The child was taken to the Lower Umfolozi War Memorial Hospital for medical attention and a case of child abandonment was opened by the Empangeni police.

Seven years in the industry, Phumzeni said he had never encountered anything like this in his career.

‘I do not have any children of my own, but when I knocked off my shift I just kept thinking of this precious child. I have not slept since Tuesday.’ he told the Zululand Observer.

A hero for saving the abandoned baby’s life, his colleagues at Servest Security have named the child Dlamini Junior and are collecting formula, clothes and blankets for the baby boy.
