Alton dumping makes serious impact

Litres of molten pitch was dumped near the traffic lights in Alton.

CLEAN-UP teams sprang into action on Thursday after hundreds of litres of molten pitch were dumped just 50 metres from the Alton robots on the John Ross Parkway.

The pitch had apparently been abandoned after its delivery was not accepted at its destination, reportedly for being at the incorrect temperature.

A bulldozer was brought to the open land – a portion of the new truck stop under construction – and once it had hardened, the pitch was easily scooped up into skips for disposal at a legal site.

The incident was reported by concerned Alton businessman Lourens Basson and an inspection revealed this was not the first such incident.

A dry stream bed adjacent to the property bore the brunt of previous dumping of pitch.

Other debris on the site included vast amounts of concrete and other construction debris left behind after the completion of the highway.

The incident was reported to City of uMhlathuze Ward 2 Cllr Alen Viljoen for further investigation.
