Mtuba ‘sinkhole’ road reopens

The R618/Riverview Road is finally open after having been closed for seven weeks for sinkhole repairs

MTUBATUBA residents can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the sinkhole which closed off a key route in town was finally repaired and the road reopened yesterday.

Seven weeks to the day, bollards were removed as the portion of the R618/Riverview Road was finally deemed fit for purpose.

During the seven weeks, investigations were conducted into the cause of the sinkhole which swallowed a taxi on the evening of 24 July.

The investigation revealed a badly corroded corrugated steel storm water pipe to be the cause.

There was a level difference between the two sections of pipe and the entire width of the road had to be dug up and levelled out.

Machinery was then brought in to remove the corroded pipe and bring in the new 1.2m concrete storm water pipe.

Once installation of the new pipe was complete, the earth and road around it was shored up and on Tuesday the road was tarred.

This brings an end to the detours around Mtubatuba Primary School and through Mtuba Mall, once again connecting the town with Riverview Village and the industrial area.
