Butchered, beheaded bush pigs found

Headless bush pigs and other grisly greenbelt discoveries in Meerensee.

THE pitiful remains of two bush pigs, skinned and heads hacked off, were discovered near a lake behind a popular shopping complex in Meerensee on Friday.

The grisly find was made during a nightly crime patrol by Meerensee CPF members and volunteers, spearheaded by Corrie Pretorius of Northern Region Protection Services (NRPS).

A resident, who joined the patrol, said the protection of species and ecosystems are under threat and natural habitats are shrinking drastically as illegal hunting continues in the green belts around Meerensee.

‘We spot many hunters with dogs operating in the bushes daily.

‘If we don’t take responsibility to protect the environment and become involved in initiatives, the stripping, destruction, deforestation and illegal hunting practices will continue unabated. Soon, there will be little left.’

Ward councillors, City delegates and members of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, CRG and CPF earlier the week joined a mass patrol organised by NRPS, to point out unlawful cutting of indigenous trees, refuse dumping and numerous squatter camps mushrooming in the greenbelts.

Clr Frik Bosman of Ward 1 said the problem areas as well as similar others, need to be cleaned up, access controlled and monitored.

‘In my view, strategic fencing should go a long way to address some of the problems.’

Clr Bosman appealed to the City to urgently attend to a list of concerns compiled following the patrol, which also included municipal sewerage systems, overflowing and left with open manholes and the ever-growing cattle consternation.
