Richards Bay man falls victim to money scam

Man kidnapped, robbed of cash outside bank.

A RICHARDS Bay man fell victim to ‘the roll of money on the ground’ scam when he was kidnapped and robbed of his cash shortly after leaving a Richards Bay bank.

According to Richards Bay SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Debbie Ferreira, the 55-year-old was approached by an unknown man who alerted him to some money lying on the ground.

The victim said it was not his money and when he tried to walk away, a firearm was pointed at him, and he was forced into a white vehicle which was waiting outside the building.

He was driven to the Richards Bay harbour where he was robbed of his cash and dropped off.

Meanwhile, Captain Ferreira said this is an old modus operandi where con artists lure their victims to secluded areas and rob them.

‘They place a roll or bundle of money on the ground and then make the victim aware of it.

‘The con man picks up the cash and suggests they both walk to another area where they can share the money, however this does not happen and victims are robbed of their handbags, cellphones, money and jewellery.

‘Often it is not even a roll of money but paper rolled up in a cash note.

‘The public must be aware of this scam and refrain from falling victim to this modus operandi,’ she said.
