UPDATE: Mtuba sinkhole road reopening imminent

The sinkhole-affected road in Mtubatuba should be open this weekend.

THE portion of the R618/Riverview Road in Mtubatuba that was affected by a giant sinkhole is likely to be reopened on Saturday.

Department of Transport Cost Centre Manager in Hluhluwe, Thola Dingiswayo, received word on Friday afternoon that contractors have completed the installation of the new 1.2 metre concrete storm water pipe and were finalising the project.

‘The dug out portion of the road is being closed up and contractors will do the premix on Wednesday or Thursday,’ said Dingiswayo.

A three-metre wide and four-metre deep sinkhole appeared on the road between the traffic lights and Pick n Pay intersection in late July after large portions of the old stainless steel storm water pipe had perished, causing earth above to fall into the cavity.

The road has since been closed since then, causing major traffic disruptions.

Businesses ‘beyond the hole’ have been badly affected as consumers chose to shop elsewhere rather than deal with the alternative routes.
