Day Nite walkers shine bright

THERE was no lack of enthusiasm at the inaugural Cancer Day Nite fund-raising event held at ZCBF Community Park on Saturday.

Totally produced by volunteers, organisers are tallying up donations made by sponsors and participants and hope to at least have raised the target of R50 000.

The day started with an energetic musical item from Richards Bay High, followed by the parade lap of VIP cancer survivors, applauded as they circled the oval track – many accompanied by their caregivers.

Len Oliver, Neville Butcher and Pikkie van Zyl made a colourful trio as they sprayed their facial hair in support of the CANSA fund-raising effort

The Bootcamp warm-up ensured everybody was ready for the day’s non-stop programme of activities designed to create fun, cancer awareness and cash for much needed intervention and education.

DJs kept things moving as themed laps, games and competitions filled the hours.

There was also time for sombre reflection as teams and individuals walked in silence by candlelight in memory of loved ones lost to cancer, but with the overriding message that cancer can be treated and defeated, especially if detected early.
