Blood champion hits a century

Andrew Killick, a dedicated blood donor has been saving lives for over 20 years.

AFTER his brother survived a horrific car crash, spent 13 weeks in a coma and relied on blood transfusions to survive, Andrew Killick was determined to become a committed blood donor and help save lives.

Twenty years later and Killick honoured his commitment, recording his 100th blood donation recently at the Richards Bay Blood Donor Centre in the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre.

The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) relies on voluntary blood donations and needs to collect the minimum of 3 000 units per day to meet the demand.

Killick said he realised the importance of blood transfusions and wanted to make a difference in people’s lives and made the conscious decision to donate blood regularly.

‘Each pint of blood can save up to three people’s lives and this can be converted into creating happiness among families and literally giving people a second chance in life.

‘In 55 days my target will have to change, as I now have set a new goal of 150 pints,’ said Killick.

Richards Bay Blood Donor Clinic Supervisor Debbie Duff thanked local donors for their continued support, especially during July which is always a challenging month for blood collections.

‘Once again our centre collected the most units in KZN. Our target was 405 units and we collected 624 units of blood.’
