UPDATE: ‘Satanic’ rape case postponed

All three suspects appeared briefly in Empangeni Magistrate's Court on Friday.

THE ‘Satanic’ rape case was again postponed in the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Rape accused Sandile Welcome Xulu (23) and his two alleged accomplices, Innocent Mthembu (25) and Zinhle Mkungo (29), appeared in court briefly and the case was postponed until 29 September.

Xulu has been charged with three counts of rape, but DNA testing could possibly link him to two further rape incidents.

He allegedly raped and robbed five women in and around Empangeni between May and March this year.

He lured his victims by promising them jobs and was dubbed the ‘Satanic’ rapist after details of the rapes emerged through interviews with victims.

Xulu told his victims he was a Satanist and would kill them through ‘Satanic spirits’ by making snakes grow in their stomachs if they told police.

Mthembu and Mkhungo, who were charged with possession of suspected stolen property and assisting another to commit a sexual offence, were both released on bail in June.

Xulu was denied bail owing to the seriousness of the charges.
