UPDATE: Cops in court for corruption

Two Rapid Rail Police Unit (RRPU) cops appeared in the Richards Bay District Court for corruption

TWO constables of the Rapid Rail Police Unit (RRPU) in Durban appeared in the Richards Bay District Court on Thursday charged with corruption and accepting a benefit.

Cst Bhekikhaya Mjiyakha (34) and Cst Ravendran Govender (40) were charged following Mjiyakho’s arrest in a sting operation by the Hawks in June this year.

Govender handed himself over days after his co-accused’s arrest, after learning that a warrant for his arrest was authorised.

Mjiyakha allegedly demanded payment of R1 000 from a Tanzanian citizen for the release of his brother, who was arrested by the RRPU for possession of narcotics.

The complainant however reported to the Hawks that police arrested his brother and other Tanzanians and were demanding payment for their release.

While being interviewed, his story was confirmed when a policeman phoned the complainant in the presence of Hawks members, ordering him to bring the money to a CBD fast food outlet within five minutes.

The Hawks swiftly swooped in and apprehended Mjiyakha who was dressed in plain clothes, but carried his police service pistol and police identification. He also had a packet of heroin in his possession.

At the police station, the Hawks found other members of the unit with seven Tanzanians held for possession of narcotics.

Govender allegedly instructed Mjiyakha to collect the money.

All charges against the Tanzanians have since been withdrawn.

Both accused were released on bail and the matter was remanded until 23 September for trial.
