Cops win car theft shootout

Two men suspected of planning a pension point robbery in Enseleni near Richards Bay have been arrested.

IN what may have been a foiled attempt to hit a pension pay out point, one suspect was shot and two others injured when police tracked them down at Enseleni yesterday morning.

The drama started in Ulundi at around 5am when SAPS Crime Intelligence member Capt Mthimkulu woke to find his Toyota Tazz had been stolen during the night.

It carried a Cartrack unit and at around 6.30am the vehicle with five young male suspects inside was traced to Enseleni, close to the pension point.

Flying Squad members and Cartrack recovery agents were spotted as they approached the car and the suspects made a run for it, fleeing in different directions.

One was shot in the leg and he and a second man were arrested.

Police are confident of further arrests. Cell phones and a 375 magnum revolver were among items recovered in the car, which has been examined by police forensic experts.

The stolen vehicle was taken to the Richards Bay Police Station for forensic inspection
