The Provincial Executive Committee of the ANC has deployed Nonhle Mkhulisi to serve as the Deputy Mayor of the uThungulu District Municipality.
The position became vacant following the death of Cllr Thulani Mashaba, who was also the Chairperson of the ANC in Musa Dladla Region.
Confirming the news, ANC Musa Dladla Regional Secretary Tholi Gwala said they were convinced Mkhulisi was equal to the task, and they had confidence in her leadership qualities.
‘We are the ones who recommended Mkhulisi to the PEC, and we are happy that they agreed with us in deploying her to local government. She would be sworn-in in the next council meeting,’ said Gwala.
‘Having her in that position makes a great deal of sense, especially since she worked closely with Mashaba. She understands the challenges facing our people with regard to the delivery of basic services. She is a long-serving member of the ANC who has served in various capacities.
‘We are bringing to the people of uThungulu an activist with a wealth of experience, a former school principal of Mfanefile Primary, a former Deputy President of SADTU, a former Member of the National Assembly and Member of the KZN Legislature, who is also the Deputy Chairperson of the Musa Dladla Region,’ said Gwala.
Mkhulisi’s election as the Deputy Mayor will mark a new chapter in the history of the uThungulu District Municipality, since both the Mayor Cllr Thembeka Mchunu and the Speaker Cllr Alice Mthembu are also women.
A down-to-earth Mkhulisi said she was not coming to uThungulu with something new, but will continue with the work Mashaba started.
‘I will continue with Cllr Mashaba’s legacy of improving local economic development projects, job creation and women empowerment, but I will not be working in isolation,’ she said.
