UPDATE: Murder docket handed to Taxi Violence Unit

Taxi boss shooting is under investigation.

POLICE have yet to confirm whether the slaying of Soweto taxi boss Dumisani Mthethwa (55) at an Empangeni garage last week is linked to taxi violence.

However, the Zululand Observer can report that the Empangeni SAPS have handed over the murder docket to the Taxi Violence Unit in Durban.

Mthethwa was brutally gunned down by two gunmen at the Engen Garage on Union Street last Monday.

Shocking surveillance footage showing how the gunmen shot Mthethwa repeatedly made national headlines.

The exact motive for the killing remains unclear, but the involvement of the Taxi Violence Unit alludes to the fact that Mthethwa was killed as a result of disputes within the taxi industry.

The Ubonye Regional Taxi Council, an umbrella body overseeing taxi associations in the uThungulu District, has condemned the killing, but did not wish to speculate on the motive at this stage.
