Beach debris spoils the show

Debris comprising concreted poles posed extreme danger to surfers competing in the Citroen SA Surfing Champs.

WHILE the SA Surfing Championships held over the past week at Alkantstrand has been hailed as a ‘wave of success’, the state of the beach has been severely criticised.

Debris comprising concreted poles washed into the water as a result of coastal erosion littered the sand area and more than just an eyesore, posed extreme danger to surfers competing in the prestigious event.

‘This is a national showpiece, even more so because it is the 50th SA Champs,’ said SA Surfing official

Tasha Mentasti, who attends most of the country’s contests.

‘Photos and videos are being splashed over national and international media and will be shown on SuperSport.

‘What a pity the visuals will leave a bad impression of an otherwise beautiful venue and a hugely successful event.

‘As a surfer myself, I went out to catch waves on the high tide and was constantly on the alert of falling off and smashing into a concrete block.

‘Even though nature can be blamed for the situation, surely it would not have taken much effort to clean up the beach.’

At least one surfer had the misfortune of damaging his board.
