Meet medicine Mike

From security guard to pharmacist assistant...this is Mike Mngomezulu's story.

FROM standing at the entrance of an Empangeni pharmacy as a security guard, Mike Mngomezulu (39) has now moved inside, proudly standing behind the counter as a qualified pharmacy assistant.

The right-hand man to the head pharmacist recently completed his post-basic course and intends to further his studies and qualify as a pharmacist technician in the near future.

After several years in the security business, Mngomezulu’s interest in people and their well-being sparked his interest in pharmaceuticals which help to heal the sick.

With his compassionate and kind heart, the husband and father of two who hails from Swaziland, said his most rewarding moment was when he qualified.

‘Since that moment, having clients come in for help and return with much gratitude, thanking me for prescribing medication which has helped them, is by far the best part of my job,’ he said.

‘However, the most frightening incident so far was when we had a man come in bleeding profusely from the head after being hit with a spanner. It was quite a sight, but we quickly jumped into action.’

In his spare time Mngomezulu enjoys cooking, fellowship at church, catching up on national geographic documentaries and spending quality time with his family.

If a film were to be produced about his life, Mngomezulu would prefer having Eddie Murphy play his character.

‘He is a light-hearted, funny guy, He reminds me of myself – simple and easy going.’
