UPDATE: Appeal to help capture injured bird

The Richards Bay SPCA requests the public’s help to capture an injured hadeda.

RESIDENTS living around Via Cassiandra in Arboretum have been called to assist the Richards Bay SPCA in capturing an injured bird.

As previously reported in the Zululand Observer, a wounded Hadeda Ibis has been flying around the suburb for the past three weeks with a compound arrow protruding through its left wing.

The local SPCA has made several attempts to try and catch the bird, but has been unsuccessful.

Senior Inspector Shelly Prinsloo said this is the organisation’s last option and has made an appeal to surrounding residents.

‘Basically we need a volunteer to put food down for the bird, which we will provide, and once a routine has settled in, we will attempt to trap it.

‘We recommend the volunteer to be a stay-at-home individual and someone who does not have any dogs, as these will chase the bird away,’ she said.

According to the SPCA, there may have been sightings of another hadeda flying around that area, also with an arrow protruding from its wing.

‘We are unsure as to whether these are two separate cases, but the reports which have come in recently, suggested the other bird has a shorter arrow in its wing.

‘If anybody has information, we urge them to contact us,’ she said.

The SPCA can be reached on 035 7532086, or 073 5514564 for after-hour emergencies.
