UPDATE: School stabbing suspect remanded for bail

The 20-year-old man appeared in Pongola Magistrate's Court and his case was postponed until tomorrow (Wednesday) for a formal bail application.

THE suspect arrested for the killing of a Pongola pupil last week in a school ground gang conflict incident, was remanded into custody after appearing in court.

Sibusiso Bhekani Nkosi (20), a fellow pupil at Khulumeluzulu High School in Mkhwakhweni area, was arrested shortly after the violent skirmish during which two pupils were stabbed.

Mbuyiseni Ntshangase (16) died on arrival at hospital and another pupil was admitted with serious injuries.

Nkosi appeared in Pongola Magistrate’s Court and his case was postponed until tomorrow (Wednesday) for a formal bail application.

The KZN Department of Education is working closely with the school, as well as the KZN Department of Community Safety and Liaison and local leadership to deal with the issue.

IFP Leader in the KZN Legislature, Blessed Gwala, has called for a summit on school violence.

‘Where are our parents, where are our community leaders and what are we doing to make sure our children are safe at schools,’ he asked.

Gwala said the summit must address the problem of school violence and its underlying causes.

‘Violence cannot be tolerated and can never be condoned. Provincial government must make the area of Pongola safer so children will have a normal childhood and it is not stolen from them by violence’.

The party has also called for the installation of CCTVs and metal detectors at KZN schools.
