KZN’s non-compliant rubbish dumps

Of the three KZN rubbish dumps recently audited by Afriforum, none were found to be compliant with applicable legislature

AFRIFORUM has embarked on a nationwide campaign to ensure South Africa’s rubbish dumps comply with national laws.

Thus far, not one of KZN’s audited dumps is compliant.

In order for a rubbish dump to comply with legislation, it must score at least 80% on a questionnaire which takes into account factors such as access control, fires, medical waste, enclosure and rehabilitation.

Of the three dumps audited thus far in KZN, the best performing was Vryheid with a score of 40% and the worst was Paulpietersburg, scoring a mere 4%.

Referring to the non-compliance of rubbish dumps in KZN, Afriforum’s Provincial Co-ordinator for KZN, Chris Fourie said, ‘This explains why subterranean water, medical waste and thick smoke clouds are polluting our cities.’

AfriForum has sent letters of demand to those municipalities with non-compliant rubbish dumps and requested action plans and target dates be implemented to ensure the rubbish dumps are, in future, managed in a legal and environmentally friendly manner.

The audit report will also be submitted to the Green Scorpions for further investigation and action against non-compliant municipalities.
