VIDEO: City responds to water wastage claims

Video emerges of City workers ‘wasting’ water.

RESIDENTS have slammed what they call a ‘blatant wastage of water’ after a video of uMhlathuze City workers cleaning a bus stop with a hose, emerged on Facebook this week.

Posted by ZuluXtreme Richards Bay on Tuesday, the video shows workers with a municipal vehicle carrying a small tank on a trailer, washing the bus stop with a hose.

‘When I approached the driver, he informed me the fresh potable water was collected at the depot in Alton and that he was completely unaware of any problems with water in Richards Bay…,’ read part of the post.

City spokesperson, Mdu Ncalane, told the Zululand Observer  that it was highly unlikely the workers were using fresh water.

‘They were using a small tank which meant they had a limited amount of water to use,’ he said.

‘I doubt it was drinkable water.’

He emphasised that although the drought was serious, bus stops were used every day and could not be allowed to deteriorate into a state of disrepair.

‘If we allow the bus stops to become dirty and stinking, I am sure people will complain also.’
